Jon is based at UCL's Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, where he is exploring how operational “data exhaust” from network operators can improve our understanding of urban dynamics and improve long-term city planning. Using communications and transport data it is possible to move seamlessly between multiple scales, and so a particular focus of Jon's research is the development of a more integrated view of London's many linkages to its surrounding regions and to the global “space of flows”. More recently, Jon has begun to examine how data drawn from Transport for London's Oyster Card system can shed new light on Londoners and their evolving travel patterns, eventually enabling us to better-predict the likely impact of “disruptions” on an extraordinarily complex transportation system. Jon holds a PhD from University College London, and prior to returning to academia he worked for eight years in database consultancy to major corporate clients in Britain and America.
