Inga Neumann grew up in Jena, Thuringia. She studied biology at the Karl Marx University of Leipzig and received her doctorate there.
As a young scientist, she took advantage of the political moment and the highly valuable international scholarship (HFSOP) and went to Calgary, Canada (1991 -1994). In 1994, she joined the Max-Planck-Institute for Psychiatry, Munich, received his doctorate at Munich University and received a 1997 Heisenberg Fellowship of the DFG.
In 2001 she was appointed to the Chair of Animal Physiology / Neurobiology at the University of Regensburg.
She is the mother of two sons.
Her scientific interests are the molecular regulation of emotions and complex social behavior (anxiety, aggression, mother love, autism).
