Dan Michaels is German Business Editor of The Wall Street Journal, based in Frankfurt, overseeing all corporate coverage in Europe’s biggest economy. He also manages coverage of the European Central Bank. He has held the positions since January 2014.
Before moving to Germany in 2014, Dan was Aerospace & Aviation Editor for Europe at The Wall Street Journal for 15 years, based in Brussels and in Paris. In that position he covered airlines, aviation and aerospace industries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
From 1993 to 1999, Dan covered Central & Eastern Europe for the Journal, based in Warsaw, focusing on business, politics and society. He initially went to Poland in 1991 to work as a management consultant in privatization; he also worked briefly on privatization in Russia.
Before moving to Poland, Dan was a management consultant with Booz, Allen & Hamilton in New York City, working across a range of industries in the U.S. and Canada.
Dan is a native of New York and graduated from Princeton University, where he studied China and East Asia. In addition to living in Europe since 1991, he earlier lived and worked in China and Taiwan. He speaks French, Polish, Mandarin Chinese and is trying to learn German.
