Alexander Kekulé is Managing Director of the Institute for Biosecurity Research GmbH and Director of the Institute for Medical Microbiology at the Martin Luther University, Halle. He is renowned as a leading European expert in disease control and prevention. His fields of research are infectious diseases and molecular oncogenesis. As deputy chairman of the Commission for Civil Protection, he is an official advisor to the German Federal Government. Aside from his research, Alexander Kekulé is an Op-Ed columnist for the German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel and publishes regularly in other opinion-leading journals such as Die Zeit, Der Spiegel and Neue Zürcher Zeitung. Prior to his present position, Alexander Kekulé was a business consultant for McKinsey in New York and a research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Munich. He studied medicine, biochemistry and philosophy and holds an M.D. from the Ludwig Maximilians Universität, Munich and a Ph.D. from the Freie Universität, Berlin.
