User Generated Health
Author: Lukas Kubina
Esther Dyson is invariably ahead of time. She has both the
brains and instincts to make this a certainty. Her early investment in personal genome service 23andme was a great hint for us. Looking at her steadily reinforced angel
investments in healthcare, the prediction of the next big thing comes easy.
As technology advances, it is increasingly easy to collect
personal health and fitness data to help us combat our own vices such as
laziness, alcohol or bad food. She firmly believes that user generated data and
personal devices like Jawbone can make us healthier. The underlying motivation
is not only obsession for personal health but also very social. Comparing the
completed kilometres on a bycycle for instance, you can compete with your
social network and health is getting gamificated.
When she is not looking at
potential investments or is fighting for government transparency, she had been
training to be a cosmonaut. Recently she had some spare time and joined us for the
DLD 'morning
party' at the General Assembly in NYC.
Meet her and learn more about why she believes healthcare is
undergoing tremendous change and her investments in the interview below.
At DLD 2010, Esther moderated the 'Health' session. Panellists Alain Rappaport (Microsoft), Stefan Oschmann (MSD) and Esther are discussing how new technology make healthcare easier.
