Exponential Space Technology: Getting Weather Right
The economic losses of extreme or uncertain weather-events are distributed across every industry and every country around the world, and are increasing in impact as climate change disrupts what we thought we knew about seasonal norms. Yet, our ability to accurately predict the weather, even in the short-term, remains frustratingly inadequate. The industry throws out words like Big Data, Supercomputing, and AI to explain the complexity problem, with the bar for improvement set at 1 day of forecasting gain per decade. Spire, a satellite-powered data company, is changing this by providing data that will result in a step function change in weather forecasting accuracy. It is both new technologies and a new mindset that is driving Spire’s progress in barely three years from the archetypal San Francisco start-up garage to an operational satellite constellation for high volume, high impact weather data that will allow us to finally get weather right, and to then make the decisions that save lives, infrastructure, and money.
