BREXIT Contagion? The political Fallout for Europe and Its Technology Sector

In collaboration with the Global Counsel.

Britain’s vote to leave the European Union is a landmark reversal in the history of European integration and arguably the most significant economic demerger between major western economies since the Second World War – one that risks disrupting the movement of goods, services and people between the UK and the rest of the EU. This session will outline the risks of Brexit contagion for the rest of Europe and will focus particularly on the future of the tech and media sectors both in the UK and the remaining EU.

The panel will be hosted by Stephen Adams, partner at Global Counsel, and will feature Stephan Shakespeare, founder and CEO of the British online market research and opinion polling company YouGov, who will explain the demographics behind the Brexit vote and the implications for eurosceptic parties in other EU countries; Professor Ann-Kristin Achleitner, Chair of Entrepreneurial Finance at the Technische Universität München (TUM), who will outline the financial risks posed by the UK’s exit, particularly for the EU start-ups, and suggest possible remedies that could boost entrepreneurial culture; Christian Grobe, co-founder and COO of the online lending marketplace FundingCircle Continental Europe, who will assess whether Brexit could prompt a flight from London to new and rising European tech-hubs, such as Berlin, Dublin and Stockholm; and Tristram Hunt, a British Member of Parliament and senior lecturer at Queen Mary, University of London, who will assess the current upsurge of political populism from a historical perspective.
