DLD Arts Interventions

When exploring the yet to come, architects, designers and artists can contribute to a social networking conference in a way that fosters interdisciplinary exchange and engenders new forms of dialogue. Since the beginning it has been DLD's interest to invite artists for site-specific interventions during the three-days gathering. These interventions are comments, created within a process of encounters and actual engagement, what differentiates them from being mere objects of representation. At DLD09 artists such as Taryn Simon (Picture: Waste Encapsulation and Storage Facility, Cherenkov Radiation Hanford Site, U.S. Department of Energy Benton County, Wash.), John Armlender or Markus Miessen exhibit their works at the HVB Forum.

In An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar, Taryn Simon assumes the dual role of shrewd informant and collector of curiosities, compiling an inventory of what lies hidden and out-of-view within the borders of the United States. She examines a culture through careful documentation of diverse subjects from the realms of science, government, medicine, entertainment, nature, security, and religion. Transforming the unknown into a seductive and intelligible form, Simon confronts the divide between those with and without the privilege of access. In examination that which is integral to America's foundation, mythology and daily functioning, Simon creates a collection of works that reflect and reveal a national identity.

John Armleder is a Professor at the Braunschweig Academy of Art and at the School of Art in Lausanne. He co-founded the artist cooperative "Ecart" and through this group he managed a seminal independent art space, gallery, publisher and performance group which created shows around the world. His work at DLD Aboard on spaceship earth from the future is now to the future is the past (2009) conceptually recalls the 1960s Op Art Movement like a visual comment conflating actual knowledge production and the post-production of existing cultural material.

eastcoasteurope.jpgMarkus Miessen is an architect, writer and curator migrating between Berlin, London, Cambridge (MA) and the Middle East. In 2002, he set up Studio Miessen, a collaborative agency for spatial practice and cultural analysis, and in 2007 was founding partner of the Berlin-based architectural practice nOffice. East Coast Europe (ECE) (2009) is a project about contemporary identity and its relation to spatial practices and international politics, inquiring contemporary perceptions of Europe from two outside perspectives: from the West (the East Coast of North America) and from the East (from the shore of an imagined East Coast Europe, the borderline between the EU and the sea surrounding it).
