Foster remodelling Munich's Lenbachhaus

International architect and DLD friend Lord Norman Foster plans to expand and restore the Lenbachhaus in Munich. From early 2009 on, Foster + Partners renovate the museum with its unique collection of works by the Blue Rider circle.

The Lenbachhaus is the former villa of the "painter prince" Franz von Lenbach and offers a look at the 19th century Munich school of painting -- since last weekend it shows a major retrospective of works by the outstanding modernist artist Wassily Kandinsky. Alongside, the museum is hosting an exhibit giving a preview on the extended design for the Städtische Galerie. Previous works of Foster + Partners are presented as well, e.g. the German Reichstag, the British Museum and the current plan for the Moscow Pushkin Museum.

Lord Norman Foster is one of the most influential architects practising in the world nowadays. As founder and chairman of Foster + Partners, he pioneered a sustainable approach to architecture and ecology through a strikingly wide range of work -- from urban masterplans, public infrastructure, airports, civic and cultural buildings, offices and workplaces to private houses and product design.

Last year, Lord Foster gave a speech at DLD07 on Urban Ecologies (see above) and sustainable architecture as an integral part of his architectural projects, and how he experienced the integration of environmental concerns into his design solutions and its consequences. With the sensitive addition to Franz von Lenbach's historic villa, he is once again about to demonstrate the ecology of a building and the poetic dimension of architecture.
