Getting social, entering Europe
Author: Jonas Grashey
The american networkers enter Europe. After Facebook announced a German version of its offense in Europe by LinkedIn. In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) Reid Hoffmann Reid Hoffmann said: „We didn't give up internationalization and we will develop our business in Europe in the second quarter 2008." With five million users in Europe, LinkedIn is a direct concurrent to successful German-based business networking platform Xing.
After having bought Spanish and Turkish network-sites, Xing has 4.83 million members. The founder of Xing, Lars Hinrichs, who spoke at DLD08 as well, came up to a turnover of nearly 20 million Euros (29.6 US-dollars). LinkedIn wants to raise its turnover in 2008 up to 100 US-dollars. With 18 million users worldwide, Hoffmann's aim is to establish as the most important business network. In reference to the success of Facebook, he says: "Most of the people will use two networks, maybe even more. One will be used for private networking, the other for business contacts. Because nobody wants his holiday-pics being handed round in the office."
