DLD Aenne Burda Award 2008

Author: Laura Bader

The countdown is running... In a few minutes, the winner of the Aenne Burda Award 2008 will be announced. Last years winner Caterina Fake, co-founder of Flickr will hand over the award to another succesful woman in worldwide media.

The tension is rising. Neta and Yam, the artists of Spoon Circus, are presenting an amusing ballplay-dance dressed in pink, not wearing any shoes, playing to the sound of classical music.

The Aenne Burda Award is one of the highlights of this year's DLD. Aenne Burda was Hubert Burda's mother and, like Steffi Czerny says, one of the first feminists in Germany. Caterina Fake comes up on stage and says that she is very exited to give the award to:

MARTHA STEWART!!!

Martha looks proud. Hubert Burda told her a few days ago that his mother would have liked her very much if she had had the opportunity to get to know her personally, she recounts.

The award looks like an ancient Greek coloured sculpture. It shows the head of the greek goddess Athene, the goddess of wisdom, promoting arts and progress.

Martha Stewart won the award for her work in American media. She founded several magazines about stylish living. She's the owner of a radio station and has written dozens of bestselling books on cooking, decorating, gardening and other domestic arts.

On stage, Martha shows her luggage, which is full of technical gadgets, such as digital cameras. She takes pictures of the audience. Also, she carries an Iphone with her. She talks about how accostumed she is to modern electric gadgets and internet communities such as Facebook. She says that a practical woman should invent things that make a woman's life easier.

She toured Munich yesterday and enjoyed the city very much, writing about it on her blog.

Also, she writes about the death of her mother. More than 200.000 people told her that they are feeling with her on the blog.

Martha herself uses the internet for many different things. She pays her bills via net, chats with all of her friends on Facebook, checks her spelling on dictionary.com, buys garden gadgets online etc. She organizes most of her life with the help of her computer.

In 1996, the New York Times asked Martha Stewart to think about the kitchen of the future and how she thinks it would look like. For example, she imagined the wall in the kitchen as a wallpaper that can change every single day. The kitchen table can move upward or downwards just in the right position you want it, there`s a computer that shows you different receipes, the drawers are dish-washers at the same time etc.

Now, some of these things have materialized. She shows pictures of the latest gadget she bought for her kitchen. The „turbo-chef" is a kind of oven that can cook the meals in 3 minutes time instead of 20 minutes. „It comes in very nice, different colours, too", Martha says.

Now the second part of Martha Stewarts time on stage follows. She is being interviewed by Tyler Brûlé, publisher of "Monocle", the monthly magazine delivering original coverage in global affairs, business, culture and design.
Martha and Tyler talk about the fusion of the different kinds of media, like television, internet and print. Martha says that for her business, this fusion was very important from day one.
Brûlé asks about Marthas plans for the future and the future of the whole USA. "The country needs another president", Martha says.

Her future plans include helping people with her "Living Centers", improving education of the young and the health of the nation.
