DLD arts projects

DLD considers the logic of arts as filter and catalyzer for innovation, creativity and alternative thinking.

Pae White
Some Network (2007)

Thinking of social network structures Pae White´s artistic intervention Some Network (2007) playfully reacts to the conference's given space and the issue of corporate Identity. Addressing DLD's corporate culture, the artist responds to the identity of the conference in a subversive way. By claiming the backside of the conference badges as a space for her artwork, White was thinking of networks and larger sustainable digital communities as enclosures or intimacies inside of social networks. Playing with abstractions and images that could demonstrate these ideas graphically, the artist juxtaposes the notion of individual identity and collective identity within larger networks or communities: in creating a billboard structure as a counterpoint to the badge design, White broke this overall image down into individual, unique pieces so they can always fit into a larger image, like a soft form inside of an enclave, inside of a larger community (Pae White, 2007).

Miltos Manetas
Jackson Pollock 2.0 (2007)

Inspired by his interactive artwork jacksonpollock.org the artist Manetas invites the participants of the DLD conference to collectively design a participatory 2.0 micro-exhibition in progress: Each participant can create his own Jackson Pollock artwork. In sharing his artistic authorship with the DLD audience, Manetas addresses the relationship between artwork and audience as well as the issue of participation and the idea of community concepts and digital copyright restrictions. Generally in favour of creative commons licensing agreements, Manetas does not abandon his artistic authorship completely: The first 25 prints of Jackson Pollock 2.0. are signed by the artist-but given for free to the public.

jacksonpollock.org
has been included in the 2006 list of the 50 Top Websites released by the Time Magazine. It is part of a larger web art platform NEEN, which has been founded by Manetas in the year 2000.

"Each participant can create his own Jackson Pollock artwork." A grandiose and incomprehensible statement like this, which demonstrates a gross and inexcusable misunderstanding of Pollock and Abstract-expressionism can only serve to invalidate any claims to art your event might offer. Such inanity! It's like claiming that playing with an Etch-a-sketch makes you Rembrandt. You're delusional.

re-appropriation and re-mixing of existing cultural information became a cultural practice in the 1990´s. so why should that be delusional to a younger generation? This seems more like an hommage to Mr. Pollock rather than delusional.

Pollock is nice but OLD.. Things need to reganerate from time to time in order to survive. ManetasPollock is a better Pollock.
