Challenge for newspapers: Craigslist

We are very happy to have Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist at DLD07. Craigslist is an online grapevine which now spans 50 countries, with listings for 450 cities from Bangalore to Mexico. Just recently described as "paid classifieds killer" in German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, craigslist is a real challenge for newspaper executives to develop products that provide better classifieds solutions.

Newmark started craigslist in 1995, serving as a non-commercial community bulletin board with classifieds and discussion forums. Touting a common sense, down-to-earth approach, craigslist hopes to "make the 'net more personal and authentic," while advocating social responsibility through the promotion of small, non-profit organizations. In Germany, craigslist meanwhile covers eight big cities (amongst them Munich and Berlin).
